Mike Hibbs
Saffron Walden
Mike HibbsMike has lived in Saffron Walden since he was five (with a short break in the 1970s to study Politics and Sociology in Birmingham). He loves the town so much he’s never moved away, mainly because the area has so much going for it. But championing the locality doesn’t mean he’s parochial – he travels widely, and has family connections in Germany and Japan.
After renovating his own home, Mike’s interest in buildings took him back to university to study Architecture. He qualified in 1994 and has a successful practice working on the many listed buildings in the area. He also lectures on restoring old buildings and reducing energy use in all types of houses.
Mike has been a Liberal Democrat since he first became aware of politics in his teens. He firmly believes that politicians, locally and nationally, are there to serve, and need to be in tune with the constituencies they represent. The Saffron Walden constituency is mainly rural with some vibrant and aspirational towns. Growth in population needs to achieve a balanced social demographic, with housing and jobs to match, and Mike believes this can be achieved if we recognise the importance of building a sustainable future while valuing the area’s past and present.
He has been Chairman of Uttlesford District Council, where he also chaired the Housing Committee. A Town Councillor for 26 years, he has twice served as Mayor of Saffron Walden. In 1994 Mike started the Saffron Walden Youth Outreach Project, which now provides two youth clubs, an outreach service and a counselling service for young people. He also serves as a Trustee to the Almshouses in Saffron Walden.
Mike is married to Hilary Shibata (also an active Lib Dem and past Town Mayor) and between them they have brought up four children.
