Rochford & Southend East, Ian Gilbert
Ian has lived and worked in Southend since 2001, and has been an elected Councillor since 2008. He is currently Leader of the Labour Group on Southend Borough Council. He works in an IT role for a company that provides market intelligence for the consumer healthcare industry.
Ian studied at Birmingham University and holds a degree in Economics & Political Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Economic Development Policy.
As a councillor, Ian has been involved in a number of local campaigns, particularly to save services threatened with closure. He is particularly proud of working alongside parents to save a children’s centre threatened with closure. Ian supports local residents associations and community groups, and serves as a committee member of one local residents’ group in the ward he represents.
Ian has been a keen chess player, having been Midlands Under-18 Champion, Captain of Southend Chess Club First Team, and still helps to organise Southend’s annual Easter Chess Congress, one of the biggest tournaments in England.
