Norwich North, Jessica Asato
Jess Asato was brought up by her Grandmother in Norfolk in her teens, living first in Gorleston and then in Rollesby. She was the first in her family to go to university, having got her GCSEs at Flegg High School. While at school she was concerned about the barriers holding young people in Norfolk back from the opportunities they could have taken, and joined the Labour Party to campaign for change.
Since then, Jess has volunteered as a special school governor for many years to raise standards for our most vulnerable children. She has also been a trustee of Brook, a charity which helps to give young people the education they need to make the best choices for themselves about sexual health and relationships.
Jess cares passionately about stopping young people from getting into a life of crime or poverty, and is an Ambassador for Make Justice Work. She also recently became a Trustee at the St Edmund’s Society in Oak Street which works with excluded young people to give them proper qualifications and a sense of hope for their future. Previously, Jess has worked as an UpRising mentor for young people from disadvantaged areas and taught debating in inner city schools.
Currently, Jess is Chair of the Fabian Society, the UK’s oldest think tank and Vice-Chair of the Electoral Reform Society. She works part time for Labour MP and former Olympics Minister, Dame Tessa Jowell.
Jess is engaged to Rob, a marine engineer, and lives on Magpie Road in Norwich North.
