Ilford North, Wes Streeting

Wes Streeting is Deputy Leader of the Labour Group in the London Borough of Redbridge, having lived in the area for more than a decade.

His career has been spent working in the third sector on tackling educational disadvantage: working with over 10,000 schools across Britain to tackle bullying to running a national charity that supports those from under-represented backgrounds to access further and higher education. Wes is passionate about access to education and opportunities for all young people, particularly given the levels of unemployment and lack of graduate jobs for young people.

Locally, Wes is a primary school governor and actively campaigns on local issues like the campaign to prevent the closure of A&E at King George Hospital and to save Barkingside Post Office from downgrading. He is particularly concerned about the prevelance of burglaries in the community and the impact of cuts to safer neighbourhood policing and Barkingside Police Station on residents' safety.

Wes grew up in Tower Hamlets, East London and is one of the few people to receive free school meals to make it to the University of Cambridge, where he read history and was elected President of Cambridge University Students' Union. He is a former President of the National Union of Students.
