Dewsbury, Paula Sherriff

Paula moved to Yorkshire as a teenager. After leaving school at the age of 18, she began working for the Police in a Victim Support role. She was proud to receive a Judge’s commendation for work she undertook supporting victims of sexual abuse.

After nearly a decade in the Police Service, Paula joined the NHS, working in a front line role in Community Healthcare provision. In 2013, the service Paula works within was transferred to the private healthcare sector and her employment was consequently transferred, so she’s seen first-hand the effects of David Cameron’s top down NHS reorganisation.

Paula was elected as Councillor for Pontefract North in May 2012. She is interested in town centre regeneration and as Chair of Pontefract Business Forum has worked closely with local businesses and partners driving forward opportunities for businesses to work and support each other, encouraging investment and increasing the vitality and viability of the town, creating sustainable employment solutions.

Paula is passionate about the provision and delivery of high quality, local healthcare and has been active on many local healthcare campaigns including the ‘Save Dewsbury Hospital’ campaign. Paula is particularly concerned about the increasing privatisation of NHS services and has campaigned locally and nationally for a fully renationalised NHS.
