Andrew Smith
Candidate for Chichester
Andrew Smith Chichester PPC
Andrew has been a Chichester District Councillor since 1991, and is a former Leader of the Council and the Liberal Democrat Group. Currently, he is the Council’s Planning Committee Chairman, and he has further experience as a County Councillor and member of Sussex Police Authority. Andrew is also Chairman of the Local Governing Body of Tangmere (Primary) Academy.
Previously Andrew spent over twenty years in the private sector as a computer programmer and analyst, primarily in the pensions administration sector.
The Liberal Democrats have consistently come a clear second place to the Conservatives in the Chichester Constituency for many years. Andrew was the Agent for the Liberal Democrat candidate on two occasions and in each case the local performance exceeded that of the national party.
As a Councillor, Andrew is not afraid to take difficult decisions. He was instrumental in ensuring the District Council improved its recycling performance by switching to alternate weekly waste collections in face of a campaign organised by the local press. He has supported controversial planning applications – even in his own ward – where it is the right thing to do.
He believes it was in the national interest to enter a coalition with the Conservatives after the last General Election. An increase in the Liberal Democrat presence in Parliament will reduce the chances of majorities for both the Labour and Conservative parties and the pandering to their doctrinaire wings and paymasters.
