Julia Cambridge
Chesterfield
Julia was born in Cyprus, where her father was stationed with the RAF and her mother worked as a nurse. She first became politically aware during the miners strikes of the mid 70’s. Confused at the stark and dark conditions her family lived in, she resolved to do something to help the community and so began a lifetime of community involvement, activism and campaigning.
Having trained at the Royal College of Art where she gained a BA (hons) and MA (RCA) in design, Julia worked in a freelance capacity as a fashion designer, illustrator and senior lecturer in fashion design. As well as having her own collection for Liberty’s of London, Julia worked extensively abroad for design houses in New York and Milan where she built up her knowledge of Europe and the European business community. More recently Julia has been lecturing, and leading seminars to businesses, particularly SME’s and start-ups, with a strong emphasis on women in business.
Julia’s many community roles include being an AGE UK carer support volunteer and Chair of a national group which campaigns against the overdevelopment of urban gardens and green spaces. Her high profile campaigns against ‘garden grabbing’ led to her become a leading voice in the fight against unsympathetic construction on green field sites.
She has been a Liberal Democrat appointed school governor since 2010, has stood on behalf of the Liberal Democrats in local elections, been a local diversity officer and a regional corporate fundraiser.
She is a strong advocate for women’s issues and is therefore thrilled to be the first woman to represent Chesterfield as PPC and Parliamentary Spokesperson.
Julia lives in the East Midlands with her husband, a Line Producer working in film and television, and her daughter who, when not studying, is a successful junior figure skater.
