Jeremy Browne
MP for Taunton Deane

Jeremy Browne was elected as the MP for Taunton Deane in 2005 and was re-elected in 2010 with an increased majority.

The son of a diplomat, Jeremy was born in London and grew up in numerous countries including Belgium, Iran and Zimbabwe. He attended Nottingham University where he was also president of the Student’s Union and editor of the student newspaper.

Before his life as a politician began, Jeremy worked as a Researcher for Liberal Democrat MP Alan Beith in 1993. He also worked in Financial Consultancy and Media Communications before returning to politics to become the Liberal Democrat Director of Press and Broadcasting.

Jeremy is a keen sports fan. He has the regular frustration of being a QPR supporter and also enjoys rugby and cricket. In his spare time he enjoys running and spending time with his partner Rachel and their young daughter Molly.

He also sits on the board of the think tank Reform and is an advisory board member of the charity Parkinsons UK.

Record Of Delivery
Taunton Deane constituency is very varied. Taunton and Wellington are the main towns; the countryside ranges from the hills of the Blackdowns and Quantocks to the Somerset Levels.

Jeremy has been a champion of local services and a keen supporter of maintaining local jobs. He backed the building of the cancer centre at Taunton's Musgrove Park Hospital and also supports the enhanced new surgical building currently under construction. He campaigned successfully to keep the prestigious UK Hydrographic Office in Taunton.

Jeremy has consistently worked to improve the infrastructure in Taunton Deane. He helped secure the funding for Taunton's new Northern Inner Distributor Road which is currently being built. Next he wants to see the development of the Firepool area, the completion of the new stand at Somerset County Cricket Club and a Northern Relief Road in Wellington.

Taunton Deane is one the the most populated constituencies in Britain, and Jeremy helps thousands of his constituents every year, on issues ranging from school improvements to farm payments.

Jeremy lives in Taunton with his partner Rachel and their daughter Molly. He relaxes by running and watching cricket at the County Ground in Taunton.

Parliamentary Experience
Upon being elected in 2005, Jeremy became a spokesman on Foreign Affairs and a Member of the Home Affairs select committee. He later became the Lib Dem front bench spokesman on Home Affairs. Jeremy was promoted to be the Lib Dem the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2008.

When the Lib Dem’s entered coalition government with the Conservative party in May 2010, Jeremy was appointed as a member of the Government. His first post was as a Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office where he undertook responsibility for South East Asia and the Far East, The Caribbean, Central & South America, Australasia and the Pacific, human rights, consular, migration, drugs and international crime, public diplomacy and the Olympics. In 2012, Jeremy was repositioned to the Home Office as the Minister for Crime Prevention; he left this post in October 2013 and returned to the back benches. Jeremy now sits as a Member of the Political and Constitutional Reform Select Committee.
