Simon Wright MP
MP for Norwich South

Simon Wright has been MP for Norwich South since 2010. He is passionate about improving education in Norfolk, delivering better transport links and protecting the environment.

Norfolk born and bred, Simon became a secondary school maths teacher in Norfolk before entering politics. In 2003, he was elected to North Norfolk District Council. He moved from teaching to become agent to Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, overseeing his 2005 general election victory. In 2007, he was selected as the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Norwich South.

Outside of politics, Simon enjoys supporting Norwich City FC and walks with his wife, Rosalind, in the Norfolk countryside.

Record Of Delivery
Simon has a record of securing investment in local transport infrastructure and delivering jobs and growth for Norwich.

Soon after the 2010 election, Simon organised a delegation of all nine Norfolk MPs to meet with the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, to highlight the challenges faced by Norfolk, including the need to dual the A11, improve rail services, and boost broadband connections. The Coalition since took an early decision to fully dual the A11 to Norwich.

Simon has pressed the Chancellor in the Commons on investing in Great Eastern Main Line to ensure that East Anglia is a powerhouse for jobs and economic growth. He successfully lobbied for a City Deal for Norwich, which will lead to more jobs locally and give the city greater power to achieve its economic potential.

Working in Coalition, Simon has supported a £700 annual income tax cut to 55,000 people in Norwich, and taken a further 30,000 people in Norfolk out of paying income tax altogether. Employment in Norwich South is at a record high, with roughly 400 fewer people unemployed since autumn 2013.

Simon’s proudest achievement of the Coalition Government is delivering Norwich South schools an estimated £4.3million in 2014-15 to support the education of thousands of less affluent pupils in the city through the pupil premium.

Parliamentary Experience
Simon was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to former Minister of State for Children and Families Sarah Teather MP in 2011, and later to the Schools Minister David Laws MP in 2012.

In 2013, Simon became Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Education, Families and Young People Committee, alongside his colleague Lord Storey. He was appointed PPS to the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg MP in 2014.

Simon has been a member of the Environmental Audit Select Committee since 2010. He is also Secretary and Treasurer of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Green Deal.

During his time in Parliament, Simon has served as a member of cross-party committees of MPs scrutinising the Energy Bill, the Gambling Bill, and the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill.
