Leeds North East
Aqila Choudhry has lived in Leeds since she was 9 years old and currently resides in Chapeltown with her family caring for her mother. She is a “Leeds Lover” dedicated to making it the best city in the UK and with over 23 years experience of volunteering and working she has supported many projects in the community.
Aqila is currently a voluntary sector representative at the strategic boards of Leeds City Council and a board member at Leeds HealthWatch and Complex Needs Board of Leeds City Council. Aqila has also been involved in the NHS Foundation Trust as a non-executive Director.
A great advocate for all minority groups, Aqila is a strong believer in equality for all citizens which has led her to become an active member of the Social Care Community Forum for Race Equality. She was previously the Diversity Champion for Yorkshire and Humber Liberal Democrats. She is also head of a charity supporting people with disabilities or learning difficulties by improving their health, independence skills, volunteering and chances of paid work.
Her roles within the party have included the role of election agent in the local elections and she is currently the Candidates Officer for the Leeds Liberal Democrats group of Councillors.
Aqila stood as a candidate for Leeds North East in 2010 and achieved huge support as a first time candidate. She aims to build on this to encourage more young people and women to engage in exercising their right in an informed way and to influence their future.
Aqila wants to represent as an MP in order to improve care of the elderly within the NHS and adult social care, achieve a voice for vulnerable people with disabilities, and secure appropriate support in education for all her constituents.
