Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change
Edward has been the MP for Kingston and Surbiton since 1997 when he won the seat from the Conservatives by 56 votes.
Edward was born in Nottingham and attended Nottingham High School and read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford.
Prior to becoming an MP Edward worked for the Liberal Democrats as an economics advisor and for Omega Partners as a Management Consultant.
Edward lives in Surbiton with his wife Emily and their two children.
Record Of Delivery
Edward has a strong record of delivering for people in Kingston. As an MP, Edward has:
Saved A&E and maternity units at Kingston Hospital from closure
Campaigned to save a number of Post Offices from closure and as a minister secured millions in investment to develop a reformed network
Campaigned and delivered additional primary school places in Kingston
Championed a series of local campaigns including reducing the speed on the A3, opposing a Tesco superstore by Tolworth Roundabout, rezoning Kingston and Surbiton stations and backing Kingston First, one of the UKs leading business improvement districts.
Parliamentary Experience
Between 1997 and 2010 Edward undertook a number of roles in the Shadow Cabinet including as Liberal Democrat spokesman for Education and for Foreign Affairs.
In 2010 Edward was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. In 2012 he was promoted to the cabinet in the role of Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.
Ed’s proudest achievement in government is to have led the policy to secure a massive increase in renewable electricity in the UK which has doubled under the coalition and on track to beat the 30% target in 2020.
