Stephen Lloyd MP
MP for Eastbourne
Stephen first stood for election in Eastbourne & Willingdon in 2005, halving the majority of the incumbent MP, and went on to gain election in 2010 with a majority of 3, 435.
Stephen was born and brought up in the coastal city of Mombasa, Kenya, but was educated in the UK from the age of eight at St. George's College, Weybridge. Prior to becoming a Member of Parliament, Stephen worked in business for over twenty years. From 1998 to 2005, he worked as a business development director at The Grass Roots Group. After departing Grass Roots, Lloyd joined the Federation of Small Businesses as a business development consultant until his election to Parliament in 2010.
Stephen has lived in Old Town in Eastbourne for years and is very closely involved with the community. A governor at Ocklynge School and patron of many local charities, he is a keen supporter of all things local.
Record Of Delivery
Stephen has always made it clear that his number one priority in Parliament is fighting for Eastbourne and Willingdon. Some of his achievements include:
Being the first MP to launch a ‘100 apprentices in 100 days’ campaign, which was highly successful, smashing the target and reaching a final total of 181 apprentices. It has since been copied by MPs across the political spectrum. By January 2014 over 3,000 new apprentices had started work in Eastbourne since the General election, more than the previous seven years put together!
Securing £70m to regenerate Eastbourne’s Arndale Centre
Acquiring £10.2 million from the Department of Education to ensure the complete buildings refurbishment of the Eastbourne Academy
Working in partnership with Eastbourne Borough Council to gain the final £4.2 million from the Department for Communities and Local Government to enable Eastbourne Homes to complete their Decent Homes Programme
Re-launching the popular and successful Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival, following a 15-year absence
Supporting supermarket chain Morrisons opening a new £20m store, which included a commitment to recruit 30% of its workforce from among Eastbourne’s long-term unemployed
Chairing the cross-community/party initiative delivering an acceptable master plan for the final development phase in sovereign harbour.
Founding the MP's Commission; incorporating key local trade groups, the council and leading business's with Eastbourne's long term economy being the primary focus.
Stephen’s current campaigns include:
The cross-party ‘Save the DGH’ campaign, to protect maternity services and fight cuts to core provision in Eastbourne’s District General Hospital
Lobbying for a fast train service from London to Eastbourne
‘Keep Albert Parade Special’, seeking to preserve the independent character of a parade of shops in Eastbourne’s old town
Actively campaigning to upgrade the A27 to a dual carriage-way between Lewes and Eastbourne
Following the success of the apprenticeship campaign, Stephen has recently launched an initiative to provide 100 people with 100 hours of work experience each within 100 days, in order to help secure employment for local people who are long-term unemployed.
Serving his constituents through community surgeries is a ‘must-do’ for Stephen. Since the General Election his outreach surgeries across town at local supermarkets, cafes and even the train station concourse, have been a regular feature. Everyone knows someone who has been helped by Stephen!
Parliamentary Experience
On entering Parliament, Stephen was swiftly appointed to the Work and Pensions Select Committee, and in 2011 was made Liberal Democrat Frontbench Spokesman for Northern Ireland. In January 2014 Stephen became the PPS to Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, the Rt Hon Ed Davey MP.
Stephen has been highly active in Parliament from the beginning of his term, and a few of his initiatives include gaining concessions from the Department for Work and Pensions in relation to Personal Independence Payment descriptors, ensuring that thousands of people across the country with reduced mobility would still be entitled to their Motability vehicles. He also persuaded the government to reconsider a rule change to student visa regulations, which threatened the future of quality English Language Schools in Eastbourne.
In addition, Stephen led a campaign on behalf of the Further Education sector to disseminate best practice across all colleges around the ‘jobs’ agenda. He also launched an initiative, Hearing Screening for Life, which can be found at www.hearingscreening.org.uk.
Stephen is involved in a number of important All-Party Parliamentary Groups, and is Chair or Vice-Chair of the APPGs for Citizens Advice; Further Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills; Equitable Life; Religious Education; Apprenticeships; Deafness; MS; Microfinance; Disability and Ageing and Older People. Additionally, he is the ‘Parliamentary Champion’ for the Federation of Small Businesses and City & Guilds.
The Independent newspaper said in 2011 that a political system that can produce elected representatives like this may well be as good as it gets.
