Duncan Hames MP
MP for Chippenham
Duncan Hames was elected to Parliament in 2010 to serve the Chippenham constituency, becoming Wiltshire’s first Liberal MP in more than 80 years.
Before his election to Parliament, Duncan was a local school governor in Wiltshire and a West Wiltshire district councillor. Duncan also served on the board of the South West of England Regional Development Agency.
In addition to his responsibilities as a constituency MP, Duncan takes an active interest in renewable energy and ensuring that all children have access to a good education.
Record Of Delivery
Duncan’s main focus is on serving local people in his Wiltshire constituency. As an MP, he has:
Campaigned successfully with the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership to secure a new rail service, calling at Trowbridge, Melksham and Chippenham, made possible by a £4.25 million grant from the Coalition Government.
Worked closely with the Swindon & Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership to achieve a City Deal for Wiltshire.
Helped secure offers of grants worth £4 million from the Regional Growth Fund to local employers.
Conducted each year more than 50 constituency surgeries, writing annually over 12,000 letters pursuing in excess of 5,000 cases for his constituents.
Encouraged many local businesses to take on apprentices, and has taken one on in his own office.
Duncan is now working to secure £18 million of government funding for Wiltshire College to rebuild its Chippenham campus. He is also campaigning to cut taxes for local people by an extra £100, to add to the £700 tax cut already delivered by the Liberal Democrats in Government.
Parliamentary Experience
Duncan speaks in the Commons most days Parliament sits, telling the stories of his constituents to people in power. He has put questions to the Prime Minister on a range of issues, including phone hacking, funding for Wiltshire College and preventing land grabs in developing countries.
With his interest in renewable energy and low carbon technologies, Duncan worked as an aide to Energy Secretaries Chris Huhne and Ed Davey. In 2012, he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
Duncan is Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People, and has successfully campaigned with a cross-party group of MPs for financial education to be included in the national curriculum.
