Mark was elected Member of Parliament for Cheadle constituency in a by-election in 2005, succeeding local favourite Patsy Calton.

He lives locally in Bramhall and has two grown-up children - Robert and Francesca. He enjoys reading, theatre, and following Manchester City FC in his spare time. Mark is also a longstanding member of the National Trust and CAMRA, and supporter of Amnesty International.

Prior to his election to Parliament Mark was the Leader of Stockport Council for just over three years, previously having spent the majority of his career working in the private sector.

Record Of Delivery
Mark believes passionately about the importance of standing up for the local residents in his area. As an MP, Mark has:

Led a campaign to stop the previous Labour Government’s plans to introduce an unwanted Greater Manchester Congestion Charge.
Successfully led the ‘save the cheque’ campaign when the UK Payments Council had planned to abolish their use by 2018 – cheques will now be accepted for as long as customers need them.
Secured backing from Senior Ministers for the next phase of the long awaited Relief Road between Manchester Airport and the A6.
Taken his campaign to end nuisance sales calls to the very heart of Government, raising awareness of these unsolicited and unwelcome calls that blight the lives of many of his constituents and presenting a petition to No 10 Downing Street.
Mark and his Lib Dem colleagues have worked hard in government to make our society fairer; they have raised the Personal Allowance and delivered a £700 tax cut for basic rate taxpayers across the country; over 100,000 people are benefiting in the Stockport Borough.

Parliamentary Experience
Since entering Parliament in 2005, Mark has held a number of senior responsibilities including being a shadow spokesperson on Home Affairs, Transport, and Foreign Affairs.

Following the election of Nick Clegg as leader of the Liberal Democrats in December 2007, Mark was appointed Nick’s Parliamentary Private Secretary.

When the Liberal Democrats entered into coalition government in 2010, Mark was appointed Liberal Democrat Deputy Chief Whip, and subsequently Assistant Government Whip.
