Julian Huppert is the Member of Parliament for Cambridge. He was elected with a majority of nearly 7,000 in May 2010. Julian grew up in Cambridge, attending school and University in the city. He served for eight years as a County Councillor for the East Chesterton ward, working on transport policy and much more. Julian is one of only a handful of MPs with a science background, having worked to identify new targets for anti-cancer drugs. In Parliament, Julian is involved in a wide range of issues, from Home Affairs to Transport, including special interests such as the environment and mental health.

Record Of Delivery
Julian is well known for his enthusiasm and engagement with local issues. He has dealt with tens of thousands of pieces of casework since being elected.

He’s been particularly proud of:

Championing the city’s economic growth and the high tech cluster. Cambridge is the most equal City in the country.
Fighting for a fairer funding allocation for the city’s schools - currently the lowest funded in the country
Successfully campaigning for a new railway station in the north of Cambridge, due to be built in 2015
Securing millions of pounds of funding for improving cycling across Cambridge
Fighting to protect the science budget from funding cuts
Julian has also led a city-wide campaign with Paralympic hopeful Claire Connon to improve Cambridge’s pavements and has been at the forefront of the fight to save the city’s only arts cinema. In 2012, Julian took his efforts to support Cambridge’s cherished independent shops to Westminster, introducing a Private Member’s Bill which would have provided additional protections for small traders.

Julian likes to fill the little spare time that he has hiking travelling, cycling and occasionally cooking.

Parliamentary Experience
Julian works in Parliament to champion Cambridge, Cambridge’s values and the issues that matter to residents in his home city.

Julian is currently a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee and is the Liberal Democrats spokesperson on Home Affairs, Justice and Equalities issues. He was a passionate campaigner for equal marriage and particularly for the rights of transgender couples. As Vice-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Federal Policy Committee, he is on the party’s Manifesto working Group.

Julian’s work prevented the Communication Data Bill (also known as the Snooper’s Charter) from becoming law, thereby protecting fundamental civil liberties.

Well known for his enthusiasm for cycling, Julian is co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group and has championed the benefits of cycling in many Westminster debates, securing vital funding for Cambridge and other cycling cities. He has won awards from organisations such as Brake, the Internet Services Association and Asian Voice.
